Quite possible I think. First, the 1%: Ancestry.com always gives a range, thus the 1% may be in a range of 0 to 6% or whatever. Second, the common ancestor maybe 6 generations back. The DNA that is passed on is 50/50 from each parent, that is to say you get half of your father's DNA and half of your mother's. But which half do you receive. If your father was half jewish and half non-Jewish, you might get mostly the non-Jewish half. This would have the effect of reducing the number of generations between 100% and 1% jewish DNA. Thirdly, the shared cM project chart, Version 3.0 (Blaine Bettinger) indicates that a match with a 5th cousin could be anywhere within the range of 0 to 94 cM, and for 6th cousin 0-86 cM. If you are trying to find a common ancestor, just bear in mind that the use of DNA has shown how prevalent illicit relationship were in the past.
