Date format/meaning

Mensaje por inka561 »

I am looking at an online tree of Belgian ancestry which has many date year with a "J" in front ( e.g. J 1575). This goes back to 1500's. Dates in the 1600's & later are entered normally.
Wondering what it means - Julian calendar?
If so why - what are the alternatives?

Thank you

Thanks Claudine

The link explains it all for me.

The second part irrelevant now

Don't usually see much in the 1500's & earlier for my lines!
Would documents from those days typically also give a day & month? the tree I was looking at only shows year.

Of course you may find precise dates, maybe they're only evaluations... You could ask the tree's owner.
