My aunt died in Chateauroux some years ago. I believe she was cremated. Can anyone please advise how I might go about finding if and where her ashes were buried/placed please? It would mean a lot to the rest of the family. Very many thanks, Lorraine McWilliams

If your aunt died after 1970, you should find the exact date and location in the INSEE death records. A search engine is available at http://phgervais.free.fr/pc_index.php

If the death is indeed in Châteauroux, you can ask for a copy of the death certificate from the town hall at https://www.chateauroux-metropole.fr/etat-civil/demande-d-acte-de-deces-326.html

Although the certificate will not include information about the burial, it won't hurt asking at the same time for the burial records.

Geneanet has over 7000 gravestones indexed in Châteauroux. That's only accessible to Premium members. If you give me her name (maiden and married), I can check for you.

Eric - Thank you so much for your kindness! As my aunt is/was the only family link to France, I probably could not justify Premium membership. Her name is "Grace LAWFORD". I would be very grateful for any information you can give me. If it is possible to visit the place where my aunt's ashes are stored, I would travel to Chateauroux. I understand that in France the ashes are not normally buried, is that right? Thank you again. Lorraine

LAWFORD Grace, born in London on 11/11/1933, died in Châteauroux on 21/04/2011 at age 77. Act # 373.

Burial: https://www.cimetieres-de-france.fr/defunt/sanders-grace-90856
Cimetière de Cré, division Dispersion JDS.

I believe her ashes were dispersed in that area. So there wouldn't be a gravestone. You can see a little more info about the cemetery at

Eric. THANK YOU so much for your help and kindness. Even though we are sad to hear that there is no grave, it has put an end to years of wondering. I was in Chateauroux once. It was beautiful and I'm happy that my aunt's ashes were scattered in such a beautiful place. Thank you again on behalf of the Lawford family. Lorraine
