Dow Family History (James Dow, husband of Catharine and son of Margaret and William)

I am trying to research James Dow, born 1846 in Scotland.

I can find no records of him before his emigration from Scotland to the USA circa 1870. I know his wife was Catharine (possible surname Low or Loew) and parents were William and Margaret (from his death certificate).

I believe he was from Dunfermline or Glasgow but am not certain. Basically I cannot find any records of his existance in Scotland (I find plenty of similarly named individuals but the dates don't make sense).

Any guidance as to how I might source info on this individual? I need a good source of Scottish info.
